Social Media and it’s influence on Kids
The internet has become a major part of our lives. We use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc., to keep in touch with friends and family members. These platforms have become a great way to share information, ideas, and opinions. However, children spend a lot of time using these platforms. According to a study conducted by Common Sense Media, children ages 8-18 spend about 2 hours per day online. That’s almost half their waking hours!
Effects of Social Media
Children who spend a lot of time on social media sites may experience negative effects. Children who spend a lot of their free time on social media sites tend to feel lonely and isolated. They might not talk to their parents or teachers about how they feel. They might even skip school or miss out on activities they should be doing at home or in class.
How Parents Can Help
Parents need to monitor what their kids do online. Make sure they know that they cannot go on social media sites without supervision. If your child tells you he/she feels lonely, make sure you listen to them. You can help your child find ways to connect with others. You could ask him/her if he/she wants to join any clubs or sports teams. You could also encourage your child to meet new people in person.
Tips for Parents
• Talk to your child about his/her experiences on social media sites. Ask questions about how he/she feels while being online.
• Let your child know that you love him/her no matter what.

• Set limits on how much time your child spends on social media sites.
• Do not allow your child to use social media sites after bedtime.
• Have fun together. Play games, watch movies, or read books.
